Eğer biz mantıklı insanlarsak bunlar nasıl başımıza geliyor? Neden bu gibi durumlarla başa çıkamıyoruz? Bireyselleşme kaderimizse toplum içinde var olmaya nasıl devam edeceğiz? Yaşamakta olduğumuz çağın kuşkusuz en eleştirel ve üretken toplumbilimcilerinden olan ve kimilerince postmodernitenin kuramcısı sayılan Zygmunt Bauman Bireyselleşmiş Toplum’da, günümüzün toplumsal ve siyasal yaşamının değişen karakterini mercek altına alıyor. Bauman bu kitapta, yaşamlarımıza dair bizden anlatmamız beklenen ama anlatmaya zorlandığımız hikâyeleri sorunsallaştırıyor. Yapılması gerekenin bu hikâyeleri sansür etme ya da yanlışlardan arındırma değil, onların, bize dayatılandan başka biçimlerde de anlatılabileceğini göstermek olduğunu iddia ediyor. Çağdaş toplumbilimin, bireysel kararlarımızı ve eylemlerimizi, sorunlarımızın ve korkularımızın derininde yatan asıl nedenlerle ilişkilendirmekte bize yardım edebileceğine inanan Bauman, yaşamakta olduğumuz küreselleşme deneyimini çözümlemekte kifayetsiz kalan halihazırdaki kuram ve kavramlarla yetinmek yerine, yeni bakış açılarının izini sürüyor. Bireyselleşmenin bir kader olduğunu, dolayısıyla da insanların yaşadıkları zorlukların ve başarısızlıkların kendi bireysel hatalarının ürünü olduğunu düşündürten günümüz toplumuna karşı kolektif bir duruş almanın etik yükümlülüğünün altını çiziyor. Küreselleşme sürecinin emeğin doğasında yol açtığı değişim, yeni düzenin özgürlük ve güvenlik anlayışlarının değişen çehresi, yoksulluktan yararlanma biçimleri ve eğitimin yeni örgütlenme tarzı gibi meseleler üzerine kaleme aldığı eleştirel denemelerde Bauman, neoliberal rasyonalitenin aşka biçtiği değer ve postmodern toplumun cinselliği nasıl algıladığı ve kullandığı gibi, görece az kafa yorulmuş konularda da ilginç gözlemler yapıyor. Freudcu baskıcı varsayım gibi Foucaultcu panoptik iktidar modelinin de cinselliğin postmodern kullanımlarını anlamadaki yetersizliklerine değinen yazar, artık herhangi bir norma ya da üreme rejimine uymak zorunda olmayan cinselliğin müphem karakterinin ve ana ilişkin olmasının toplumsal içerimlerinin altını çiziyor.
