Kitabın ehemmiyetli bir yanı da Dostoyevski'nin de gençliğinde aynı romanının kahramanı Aleksey İvanoviç gibi kumar bağımlılığı problemi yaşamış olmasıdır. Bu yönüyle otobiyografik bir roman olduğunu söyleyebileceğimiz Kumarbaz için yazarın hacimli bir biyografisini kaleme alan Joseph Frank şunları söylemektedir: Kumarbaz'ın basit bir biyografi olarak okunmaması gerekir ama Dostoyevski'nin kendi kumar bağımlılığını kendi kendisine karşı nasıl akladığıyla ilgili bir fikir edinmemize de izin verir.
