Tolstoy, eninde sonunda ölecek olduğu bu hayatın anlamını bulmaya çalışır. İnsanlığın yaratılıştan beri sorduğu Ben neden varım?, Hayatın anlamı ne?, Ölümlü dünyada tüm bu çaba niye? sorularına cevap arar. Bu anlam arayışı önce bilimle başlar. Fakat bilimin verdiği cevaplardan tatmin olmaz ve felsefeye yönelir. Sokrates, Hz. Süleyman, Schopenhauer ve Kant gibi önemli düşünürlerin görüşlerine yer verir.
