Onun Fransız devriminin etkisiyle coşan bir devrimci; Alman milliyetçiliğine karşı çıkan bir evrenselci; kağıt oynamayı, arkadaşlarıyla tartışmayı, meyhanelerde yarışırcasına içmeyi seven ve dolayısıyla birçok kez disipline verilen bir öğrenci; dans etmekten, kızların çevresinde olmaktan hoşlanan neşeli bir genç olabileceği pek akla getirilmez.Oysa Hegel, olumlu kişisel özellikleri, bilgisi, geniş ufku ve büyük ilgi gören dersleri sayesinde Hölderlin, Schelling, Goethe, Humboldt, Fichte, Novalis, Schlegel kardeşler, Mendelssohn gibi isimlerle dostluğunu sürdürürken içinde yaşadığı toplumun en etkin şahsiyetlerinden biri haline gelmiştir.
